Just put a new beam in and had the gear lever out during the process.

It's all back together but now iv'e got no second gear and first is a pig.

Is the adjustment somewhere on the lever itself ?.

Have I put it back together wrong ?. It looked simple enough.

Third / fourth slip in easily.

The gearbox was absolutely fine before this so I'm hoping it's nothing major.

It sounds as though you have not adjusted the stop plate at the base of the gear lever. Your manual should explain the procedure.

Can't seem to find it in my trusty Haynes.

Is it a case of removing the two bolts either side of the gear lever and having a fiddle or is more technical than that ? :? .

Thanks for the reply though. I am reassured that its not new gearbox time :D .

OK, this is what the Bentley manual says

"Loosely install the gearshift lever assembly on the floor panel. Engage second gear. Then slide the gearshift lever bracket on its elongated holes to position the lever as shown in figure 3-17."

Then

"Using the tip of a screwdriver, position the stop plate against the gearshift lever as shown in Fig 3-18. Then tighten the M8 bolts to 14 ft/lb."

Now, figure 3-17 shows the gear lever at 90 degrees to the floor across the width of the van and figure 3-18 shows the stop plate just touching the the collar on the gear lever. The gearshift lever bracket is the cone like bit that holds the ball, spring etc and the stop plate is the movable plate under it. The last bit will have to be done from under the van. I hope all that makes sense.

Thanks very much.

Will have a go later this morning.

Its replies like this that make the forum so great.
