MY LADS JUST BROUGHT HOME THE LATEST MOT "UPGRADES"these are the ones that will affect our buses
1-split dust boots on steering joints and suspension
2-inoperative steering locks
3-drivers seat must be adjustable and lock into place
4-tow bars and electrics
5-significant oil leak from steering box
6-brake fluid warning lamp
7-main beam tell tail
8-battery(security?)
9-speedo
10-engine mountings
6-10 are new testable items so no specifics yet,theres also things like damaged wiring and chafed/split fuel hose that have been added.
looks like i will be fitting new suspension boots (or fliped spindles !!)
this is from jan 1st.
 
:evil: ohhhh they get worse every year brake fluid warning lamp....aint got one of those ...just use the mk 1 eyeball ..and check monthly...does this mean ive got to fit one or is it exempt we will have to suck it and see on that one

Looks like I'll be fine then, mine has all of that....
 
mostly US busses with the brake warning lamps,no specific details yet on most of this,theres a lot more that will make a differance to your modern daily ,mostly electronicaly operated stuff,srs,hand brakes ,elcy power steering ect.just needs to be working properly ;)
 
As for brake warning light. If it wasnt fitted from new it isnt something you'll have to add.

Regarding 'split dust boots', at the moment so long as there is not excess play in the joint, having a split boot will not constitute a 'fail'. As of 1st January, regardless of the condition of the joint, a split in the boot will mean a fail certificate.
So, with the quality of the boots on most replacement parts, budget on 4 new track rod ends every year...... :roll:

German track rod ends and 4 German CV boots, all had cracks appearing in less than a year.

Don't quite get the 'innoperative steering lock' thing, thought the MOT was about safety, not security?

Thought the battery being securely fixed was a requirement already, makes sense, as does the leaky steering box and engine mount checks.

That's going to cause some trouble too, I know of quite a few buses with static drivers seats, the one in the Trekker is too!

adjustable? well i can have it like it is or take it out and put it in the back, adjustable for what , my legs dont get any longer just by stomach seems to change size for the worst :shock:

My drivers seat has one position. As far back as possible............otherwise I can steer with me bloater :oops: :oops:

As for tow bars. Hurra!!!! no more people fitting towbars without electrics then throwing two ton of kiddies bikes on the back so you can't see their tail lights!!!!


My car once failed it's MOT on a loose battery. I would complain but it's was a 76 Hillman Hunter and the battery was found to be sat on the engine!!! Oh well I was a spotty oink of 18.

Engine mounts? What's them then? I have only 4 bolts!!!! However I guess technically the gear bag mount could count.


Split dust boots? I had to replace all my ball joint ones as they had all done a runner
 
no details as to what would be a fail for steering lock ,might just be that it releases ok,might be more to do with electronic ones?(bl**dy renault s**t)will see if i can get details asap.tbh would think its more to do with releasing as that would be safety :shock:

Split boots on vans lowered just on adjusters will become and annual service job I reckon.
My van has no steering lock ... we'll see on that one
Driver seats on tubbed buses wont be as easy as perviously I guess, but I suppose adjustable is debateable? How adjustable?
Tow bar is interesting ... I thought this reffered to its mounting as in it had to be chassis mounted, not bolted to the rear bumper or something.
Steering box leaks are easily overcome, for the test, anyway ;) My wife had an old car with a leaking steering rack. Every year it got cleaned with WD40, dried off, and would then pass :)

The rest all seem fair enough.
 
how do they plan on testing the spedo ? besides I thought that was allready a requirement.
 
I will need to change the bulb in my main beam dash light haha and as for the brake fluid warning light, my bus is a US import but I've rewired it and there was no wires for the warning light in the loom :-/
 
no ,speedo not part of test at moment.no requirement to road test.always thought that was wrong as could have something that made vehicle unsafe/undrivable that wouldant show in static testing.
 
take the lamp out and fit a blanking plug,infact some euro models didnt have a lamp just a factory fitted blanker.

I'll stick to my MOT station they are great, call and book tell em its fine (checked properly,,, ish) park it for an hour down theirs and have a gas n a coffee

Then leave with cert :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

Hell i remember back in the day a place i used to mot me bikes, ring up and collect :msn4:
