Hi there people , i have been using a grinder in my van prior to installing my headliner cutting off a few bit off metal , was going at it happily until a neighbour came over banging on my van telling me to stop , He was concererned that i would damage the inside of my screen with hot metal hitting it , TOO LATE :( My brand new windscreen has tiny spots all over it ,
Now the question is , is there any way i can get rid of said spots , ???

So gutted it hurts , Live and learn i guess

Im sure this makes you feel no better but i am in the same situation, only it wasnt me, it was the restoration company i took it to. Perhaps a scouring pad?

Gutted for you
I did the same with my rear window, but have yet to find a fix
I'll keep an eye on this in the hope someone knows a way!

fellas, i will ask one of my mates who has a glass furniture company. he lent me his glass polisher for my windscreen not so long ago.

it got most of the minor ones scratches out and made the major one less visable. couldnt comment on its efficiency on grinder splatter marks tho'

it is basically a mop with a cutting compound made for glass.

i will report soon as i have heard from him

Oh no! Well at least you didn't do what I did. I though that it might be a problem, so I put loads of decorators' cloths down inside to catch the sparks. Yeah, yeah, it's obvious now. Walked away pleased with myself, and turned round to see smoke pouring out the back of the bus. Just got the cloths out before the flames got big....

is that futureglass by chance, i kmow him too, not see him for an age tho

Guess its worth trying jewellers rouge but weld spatter and grinder sparks tends to knacker glass in a terminal way. It's much cheaper to buy a proper welding blanket!

As Wheeto says, Dont want to piss on the party (for want of a better expression) but once its there its in there for good as the moulton metal burns in to the glass,

if the splatter isn't too bad you can get a lot of it off by rubbing it with a 2p piece, use it flat and go back and forth across the splatter. got a lot of mine off that way. :)

That was me on Saturday fitting a rear seatbelt mount.

Back to the grinding marks, I used a scraper blade to remove the larger bits, but my glass is well and truly f*cked and needs replacing.

No use for now but for next time, I have seen an anti-splatter spray which I think is meant to coat surrounding areas so splatter doesn't adhere.

Splatter will rust too so it will begin to look worse before too long :(

I think the best option is to get a stone to hit it Grazy - get it replaced on your insurance. Mine cost me £50 in excess when it was smashed, much cheaper than buying a new one.

The screen will probably be weakened now if its had a lot of sparks hit it.

If you need a hand fitting a new screen just let me know, I'm a dab hand at these days!

i picked a few off a side window when i realised i had done the same. suppose you could use a sharp stanly blade with glass clear, wont get rid of the holes but will get rid of the metal that will go rusty

if your insured....check that your no claims wont be affected by a windscreen claim (most are not) and check that you have a low excess (usually its £50 on glass)

then accidently throw a brick / hammer / something hard at it or remove the screen and claim it broke completely and you have already cleared up. (latter option is best as it gives you time to sort out any rust on your windscreen surround and buy a nice new rubber)

Then phone insurance and say screen broke when a stone hit it....make sure you tell them you had a LAMINATED screen

Then get autoglass or whoever they send to fit you a nice new laminated screen with your new rubber ....all for £50.

Alternativly I was follwing a van into Bristol the other day that specialised in glass restoration and that included grinder splatter (cant rememebr company but does confirm that it is possible - at a price!)

Thanks for all the replies people ,I am still cheesed off , but its not as bad as i first thought ,

I have used a stanly blade over it knocking tops off the spots , i will use the van for a bit and screen may not last over the winter , !
