Hey folks, I just bought a stock replacement muffler for my '71 SC. I went to install it this past weekend only to find the mustache bar blocking the way.

Is it possible to replace the muffler without removing the motor from the vehicle? I mean, if I jacked up the motor, then removed the bar... would that do it?

I've replaced mufflers on Beetles and Ghias before...but this is my first Early Bay...

Advice please. :)

Thats odd. There something wrong here because the exhaust can be replaced without removing the engine mount bar. Where is the problem? Maybe post a pic or two?

Yes the stock silencer should fit ok. You may find that it is very close fit though to get the two pipe clamps (for the heat exchangers) into position, but with a little fiddling It can be done.

(just thought that if its not a bus engine case and you have one of those converter bracket things on, maybe its put it all in the wrong position?...just a second thought)

Thanks for the replies. As I mentioned, I'm used to Type 1 applications where there is nothing in the way.

I was hoping that it would be a quick and simple remove/replace...

I'll take a closer look. I'm glad to hear that it can be done without removal of the engine mount bar.

As for the motor, it's 100% stock, dealership parts manager owned...genuine VW Gold Case motor...no adapter.

I'll get back at it and post up some pix of the progress. I have rebuilt carb that should go on the motor anyways. :D

Thanks again...
