if you have a smart relay that doesnt switch on and off ,or chatters ,there is a trim switch on the circuit board so you can set them because of different voltages in old busses they might need a tweek but wired with correct cable you can get them spot on

I bought a 'Smartcom' self switching relay for my leisure battery... It lasted a whole of 5 minutes!! Back to the oldskool standard relay now and can't fault it.

I had a self switching relay and i had all the symptons you described but i'm sure my relay was a solid box with no way of adjusting it so i also went back to old school tecnhonlogy and fitted a 40A relay.
No issues with it since

if a relay breaks send it back, i fit hundreds of these to cars every year
to be honest i dont need comebacks and because they are fitted "inside and dry" they are the most reliable i dont know which one you used froggy but ive fitted most and they all are adjustable some have a smal hole under a sticker

The one i had came from a caravan shop near me, cant remember the make. To be honest if i had known it was adjustable then i would still have it fitted but the constant chattering when we were camping drove me nuts and as i had a 40A relay in the garage it was just as easy to re-wire.

This was the relay i had fitted, someone on here now has it (sorry i cant remember your name  )

what are these 'smart/self switching' relays for? to isolate the leisure battery from charging circuit if the engine isn't running?

Pretty much.

Though it also helps to direct the cahrge to the primary battery first, so
only when there is a low electrical load on the main system and the regulator
output voltage rises will it switch the relay over to charge the leisure section.

Cheers

James
