Evening all,

Steve Strong Engines and steve himself have been getting a bit of a bashing on here as of late.

I'd just like to take the time to congratulate Steve and his bride on getting married. I believe from a text he sent another forum member he cut his honey moon in devon/cornwall short on monday to sort out some engine related mater.

So congratulation Steve. I hope this is not a shock to your partner and good luck to the pair of you for the future

J

I know Andy, a real shame he had to cut his honeymoon short due to Sharkys engine issue. Just glad he took the time out of his personal life to correct the issue for him. Amazing considering he was on his honeymoon, his mrs must be really understanding!

He may have got a bashing but what do you expect if you bodge engines and take peoples hard earned money for the privalge...

To the genuine people, many thanks.

To the sh*tstirrers, well played.

To James, leave my wife out of your games fella.

To Private jobs, i got kicked out of origami classes for letting my work get wet which made it unusable...

Steve

Steve,

I've not included your wife in anything. I was congratulating you on getting married. I am not so sure why that is such a big deal. You posted up on here in another thread that you were on your honeymoon, I therefore assumed you had gotten married. Was that not the case?

You also said you had left your honeymoon to come back after getting a call about an engine issue last week that needed resolving.

Whats the issue? I am not taking the piss or bringing your reputation into dispute.

I have no idea why you felt the need to get the thread removed from VZI?

A couple of observations- I'll likely post this again in future as I think it's worth keeping in mind with this stuff.

(note- I don't know Steve, I'm not just talking about this issue but ALL threads where engine builders get slagged off, especially the ones with no proof by people that don't know a huge amount about engines- again, not specifically talking about this issue. I've just been wound up by so many of these threads that I think it's worth making some things clear)

1. Most engines fail because they're poorly set up. USUALLY it's not because they've been made poorly- they're supplied bare and it's up to the installer to set the timing, dwell, valve gaps, spark plug gaps, tinware, thermostat, flaps and importantly carburettor settings. That is a LOT of trust. I've done it myself- I've bought an engine from TES, and MY mechanic fitted and set it up. There was nothing wrong with the engine but it ran lean because of my mechanic. I cracked a head and pulled 4 head studs because I didn't know better and I STILL went on the internet and bitched about the engine and how it broke. Like I say, I didn't know better at the time- I've retracted it and apologised since but there was still damage done. This happens all the while, FAR more often than engines that are just made badly. For the record TES were really good about it.

2. It takes a lot of work to build up a good reputation and very little to destroy it. Please consider that this is the latest in a long line about different people and it has hurt people's incomes- please consider the implications when thinking about posting this kind of thread.

3. Everyone makes mistakes. I know that it's hugely disappointing when you've spent a lot of money but that's life- hopefully these things will get resolved. It doesn't give people the right to be vindictive. Of course, if it doesn't get resolved then the lack of customer service is worth mentioning.

Just for the record- If I see a thread about failed engines, I'll scout through the pictures for obvious problems and then check a few things. I'd want:
a picture of the engine, fitted.
Valve gap setting.
Dwell setting- NOT JUST FEELER GAUGE GAP! (For the record your car will run SO much better with properly set dwell angle, and you can get a meter for about a tenner)
Timing setting
CO level achieved using a four gas or CO meter. Tuning your carb by ear is not good enough unless you really know what you're doing, and that's difficult to prove.

If the person complaining doesn't know this stuff, and there's nothing obviously wrong in the pictures, I'll treat the complaint as unsubstantiated and pay little mind to the criticism.

I hope all involved get this issue resolved to satisfaction.

For me customer service is EVERYTHING, and when in times of great need, it is so often lacked.

This is where, a quick phone call to the customer would put everyone at ease and the whole slagging off journey would be avoided in most cases.

Well said.

Everybody is capable of making a mistake, it is how you resolve it that matters. :|

Well said Happystamps, it's what I suspect a lot of people, myself included, have been thinking. Disappointing products and customer service is frustrating, but banging on about it relentlessly on open forums isn't the way forward.

I totally agree,in my case both engine cases had faults.
Unit one had crumbling case where the oil filter fits in by the sump and instead of having 6 studs i had 5 and the sixth was damaged beyond repair,no alloy left to even helicoil or put another stud in because the opening had crumbled so badly that the hole was not round but "C" shaped, not to mention the exhaust studs i had to replace.
The second unit, well the pictures speak for themselves were the stud was mangled and pulled from the case, the nut was only on by a couple of threads and the rest had been flattened, again some exhaust studs needed replacing.

Both engines had been running fine with no faults, just that both engine cases were not what i call serviceable.
Hopefully the repair to the second unit has worked and with any luck i shall have it up and running this weekend to see.
As in the post i put up about the outcome,i wanted a refund because i was not happy with the service on both engines, but was only offered a third unit instead, which,i declined, been bitten twice.I asked if he would pay for the repair which he agreed and that's where it ends.
Overall not a happy experience and not one i am willing to repeat, only hope that the repair holds and i can enjoy the van.

Regards.
