Just out of interest what tachometer are people using in there buses. Looking at a top dash tachometer that rpm to 6000. What about.

Cheers Gabs…

You’ve seen mine. It’s all the way from Melbourne Australia, Sydenham to be exact.
IMG_4282.jpegLoads of other meters in that face too. None connected up just in case I started worrying apart from the tacho.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,shift light works great just before five  :)

I like the auto meter mini monster tachometer, they are smaller and come in a bunch of different face options , I’ve mounted them over the mirror in a couple of beetle installs and it is a great place to see it out of the corner of your eye and not have to look down. Fishing the wires up into the roof is an adventure in itself IMG_0205.jpegIMG_0355.jpeg

I reckon you should get all the other connected Ozzie ref the oil temp and pressure. Not a big job with winter on its way.

Managed to snag this from a gent on this site before he left for Australia, he used to make them.
You can get the electronic ones now from JKampers if memory serves.
Sure someone will be along to help.

As far as I'm aware he's still over here, maybe it was a family visit. He got engaged a few months ago and I messaged him about Skeg.

This is a job-lot of three, circa 1980s vintage, NOS - new-old-stock, 52 mm diameter, VDO Cockpit 0~6000 rpm alternator-sensed engine-tachometers.

First Marked: 230/105/3 | 12V | 993 1660 Hz | massefrei | 10.86 | justierbar | NO2 10.86

Second Marked: 230/105/3 | 12V | 993 1660 Hz | massefrei | 10.86 | justierbar | NO2 10.86

Third Marked: 333/230/105/3 | 12V/993 1660 Hz | 2.87 | justierbar | masseFrei | NO2 2.87

I intend to use one of these in my VW Type 4 engine, British specification, 1973 VW "1600" Type 2 Westfalia Continental campervan, for which I have already incorporated a W-terminal into the Bosch 55A alternator.

At sometime in the future, I shall probably sell one or both surplus VDO Cockpit 52 mm tachometers

There is also VDO Cockpit "Night Design" 52 mm tachometer

For those who seek something more in the style of the 1968~73 VW Type 2 factory-fitted instrumentation, there is or was a combination tachometer & oil-temperature indicator.

On the right-hand side of the instrument panel, retro-fitted by Jürgen Bolle, to a German specification, Deutches Bundeswehr (i.e. German Army), 1972 VW 1600 Type 2 Kombi, is an ONG (i.e. Okaser Nöte Gard) brand, combined 250~6500 rpm tachometer & colour-zoned oil-temperature indicator (appears to have blue, green & red coloured zones, indicating cold, normal & hot), of identical style, to that of the stock, factory-fitted, VDO speedometer and combined fuel gauge & warning-light cluster.

For anyone seeking to maintain a stock, unmodified appearance, to their vehicle, this would be an ideal way of gaining the advantages of supplementary instrumentation. I conducted an Internet search for ONG instruments or gauges, to find out more about the company, but drew a blank. Perhaps one of you might have more luck!?!

For more information and illustrations, regarding this military specification, 1972 VW 1600 type 2, refer to the following magazine article:

David Eccles & Andreas Plogmaker, "Atten-Shun! Herr Oberst Reporting for duty", Volkswagen Camper & Commercial, Issue 14, Spring 2004, Pages 22, 23 & 25.

VDO still make a version of the Cockpit 6K Tachometer. It's not changed much from Nigel's NOS '80's version, but has a plastic body now instead of pressed steel. I fitted one to my own bus, it works well.

Sunpro III. Was given to me for my 40th quite a few years ago...

I keep meaning to wire in a switch so it can operate as an internal light because it looks cool!

Presently wired into the dashboard light so you can turn the backlight off at night.

That looks rather like a VW 15/1600 Type 3 clock next to the speedometer!

It also seems that have upgraded to the 1973~74 steering-column mounted windscreen wiper & washer stalk-switch! Are you using the original dashboard-mounted windscreen wiper & washer rotary-switch for a rear-window wiper & washer system?

I vaguely recall that the modern version of the VDO Cockpit lookalike (Vision or Cockpit International ranges I think!?!) 0~6000 rpm tachometer, might have the option of being configured for either ignition-pulse sensing or alternator sensing.

The indicator stalk swap was more out of an MOT requirement than a style choice, testers were fussy about working indicators.. Not my best move, some.JK Chinese junk. The indicator cancel stopped working after a month and I have to manually aline to the centre to stop it blinking.... I still have the original stalk and will swap back after fixing it at some point. The clock I found on eBay, I seem to remember it's a 7 day thing, the idea being the ignition turns on and winds the mechinical mechanism up.and maintains time for 7 days without power. I have unplugged it as it was too loud at night. But it does look cool and its right twice a day.
