I knew the misfire was causing the engine to burn more fuel, but not 1/4 of a tank to do 8 miles....

Misfire sorted, 2 sets of dodgy plugs.
Both gone in the bin, new set from GSF cured it straight away. :D

Knackered filter could have been a killer

Where was it located?

That is well scary !!!

These filters are a right pain. With older vehicles you often need one to stop the dirt getting into your carbs.

If you fit it after the pump, like they always used to back in the day, then they are in the engine bay and will squirt petrol if they break whilst the engine is running. However, once the engine is stopped the leakage rate becomes very small or none depending on how good your pump is.

If you fit it before the pump you can get it out the engine compartment too but if it fails the leak will continue unabated.

Reason I am posting is because a van burnt out locally recently. The filter was under the tank. It or the pipes to it failed and when it caught fire there was no way to stop the petrol flowing.

I suppose one could fit a cut out solenoid but then you have still more pipe connections and another electrical component that could fail and cause trouble.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could have a filter inside the fuel tank.

 luck lad indeed.

The fuel pipes are a real issue and need constant checking, I'm going to check mine again just to be safe and the filter for sure.

Instead of all the flexible hose would it not be better to run as much metal fuel pipe from the tank right up to the pump? Mine has only a short bit of flexi from the tank exit and not directly sitting over the heat exchangers. It joins to a steel pipe and runs through the rear tin, over the top of the manifold and quite a ways round to the pump. Flexi to the pump inlet and up to the carb with a flter in between. Not sure whats best :?

could of been a very sad story indeed good find before worse happened

would it not be best to fit a filter king

stolen off google not mine

also with pressure guage here

could potentially be put in the engine bay in between pump and carbs giving you the 5.6mm to 8mm pipe jump and accurate pressure regulating
