Universal Throttle Cable Advice - hopefully now fixed proper

Just fitted a new universal throttle cable this afternoon as the original size one was too short for Buttys new pedal linkage, fitting was a doddle but I'm thinking about an error I may have made - at the Carb end I cut the cable to size then attached the metal end piece that the cable goes into and secures with a grub-screw. This part seems a bit low quality and I'm afraid that said grub-screw will fail/loosen eventually at some point when I put my foot down.

I'm now wondering if I should have tried to force the cable through the holes on the metal end piece and then secured it with the grub-screw to give it more clout. or is there a better quality end piece I can buy for the cable?

Any advice gratefully recieved - weve got a trip to Legoland next week for my daughters birthday and if it goes tits-up, my balls will be left on the Hard Shoulder!

I had similar bother although didn't have much luck getting advice - was really hoping for some photos of the set-up. Maybe we'll get som enow...

I thought the grub screw was rubbish too - is yours the same one that tighten with an allen key? I ditched it for a proper screw that i could tighten with a socket and did feed the wire further through the barrel bit to clamp on tighter. It was in at the garage recently so i got it checked while I could and it is fine. more importantly it has held on for the camping trip we did last weekend.
 
What about soldering the joint, just to give you a bit of thickness to the wire so if the grub screw slackens slightly the solder will hold (for a bit anyways).. Remembering that a new cable will stretch also.

I did think of that but worried about the fuel lines and carb right next to a hot soldering iron!

What do ya reckon?......safe????

Did you cut the cable then grub screw it or bend it through the dodgy 90degree side hole then grub screw it? I think I'm gonna replace the grub screw with a bolt......
 
I've been thinking of getting one of the cable ends and barrel clamps http://jbevw.com/products

I already have the roller tube which is a nice piece of kit and has helped with throttle issues, particularly not needing a huge spring to return the throttle to idle :)

Oh well, didn't replace the grub screw.

Broke down half an hour ago in Hailsham, 40 minutes from home!

Waiting for a low loader to tow me home

Mrs ain't too happy as we are meant to be going to Legoland on Thursday for my daughters birthday and its also my wife's birthday tomorrow!

What am I doing wrong at the carb end of this cable??? -
I can't see fuck all but it feels like the cable has pulled out from the housing that the grub screw sits in - is there a special/better way to fit these universal cables????

No probs, I'always just fed the cable through the locking barrel and tightened it down there. The end pieces just look like an unnecessary weak point. I have the same carb as you(ish).

Nothing wrong at all - except too short for use with Butty's kit.

Have now fixed it - got a new top quality black steel 5mm grub screw plus an Allen key
That fits (2.5mm)

The cable is now in the lug proper tight - before I had to tighten with a set of pliers as none
Of my Allen keys would fit

Driven about 10 miles and all seems good
Spare cable / lug / and grub screws on board!

Legoland here we come!

Should have called , i live in Hailsham , very odd this cable length problem , all the ones ive fitted have been ok on the length cable wise , no universal cables used anywhere , only people that seem to have issues are people buying new cables from Heritage , i wonder if they are labelling them up incorrectly on the length front .... Has been known .... The other thing is my throttle kit isnt actually much different in hole positions to the original , so i think issues are with cable suppliers .... Going to try and find out what length proper cables should be and try and buy up a batch of them . Hope your sorted now ..

I was aware you lived local but didn't want to call at that time of night!
It's the grub screws on these universal kits that are crap,
Made if some dodgy alloy and I couldn't find an Allen key to fit out of my metric and imperial sets........well dodgy!

Like Butty said, and I have a normal VW throttle cable and a throttle kit, no problems with mine, they must be supplying you the wrong cable?
