Hi all - I was thinking about what stuff I needed to make sure I had in my bus for camping and then I got to thinking it might be a good idea to carry a few spare bits and bobs too. I'm no mechanic, so if anything needs to be fixed it'll be lovely Mr RAC man who does it, but if the parts are there then I thought his job would be a lot easier and I'd (theoretically) be on my way quicker.

So far I have:

- fan belt
- Spark plug
- Fuel filter
- Jack

What do you guys carry?

I carry the usual fan belt jack and plugs but over the years as I've accumulated spare bits and bobs I just tend to put them all in a box under the back seat.
I carry a spare distributer all set up ready to go, it's easier to swap the whole thing if you have a problem.
I also carry a fuel pump, fuses, wire, crimp tools and connectors, zip ties, jubilee clips. Insulation tape,oh and a spare coil .
Also A Snap On jump pack.

rocker cover gaskets - mine used to blow until i got new bolt up covers but i still carry some around
oil - for when the rocker cover gaskets used to blow and i'd gently spray 2.5l of oil along the motorway
fan belt - not needed yet but sensible
fuel pump - as a result of the pin popping out of one which i found, popped back in and fixed at time but next time who knows
trolley jack - its my friend
breaker bar + 3ft extension pipe - for cracking off wheel bolts
jump leads - well used due to the state of my battery!

things that have put me on a lorry home

not having a spare alternator when one seized
not having a spare engine when one seized

Fan belt(s)
Plugs
Leads
Rotor arm
Throttle and clutch cables
Fuses
Fuel filter (incase it cracks)
Bulbs
Electrical tape
Duct tape
Tie wraps
Jack

Then all relevant hand tools for doing little jobs like socket set, breaker bar, pliers, torch etc
I keep all the tools and parts in my two rear slide out drawers. They're perfect for that.
:D

I used to carry loads of bits and pieces, but these days all I carry now is a fan belt, some locking wire, tywraps, length of wire, tape and a couple of basic tools. If I can't fix it with that lot then it's time for recovery!

The law of sod states that what ever take wont be required to fix any fault. Just remeber your RAC/AA/Green flag card :)

If you have kids it is worth while carrying chocolate or some other form of treat to stop them whining that their weekend away has been cut short.

In my experience they dont seem to realise our buses are old and are not in fact "rubbish" cars, just characterful This description could be my fault as everytime we see someone broken down my son asks what sort of car it is and I just reply a rubbish one...

This is great - I'm glad I'd not missed anything major (other than gaffer tape!). We have a first aid box in each of our cars that's stuffed with cereal bars and contact lenses - we've not got any kids but my fiancee isn't worth being around if she gets too hungry  :msn4:

I'm also now carrying the coupling on the gear selector at the gearbox end after today when a friends decided to shed one half of the bush. Such a small item too it seems still not to.

Sent from my iLife4 suite of applications.

Having returned home at midnight last night on the back of a recovery truck, I have added a spare fan belt to my ever growing list of spares.

mine still has what looks like an original spare fan belt behind the passenger seat - i always assumed they all come with a spare originally as there is a strap holding it in place
