As can be seen work has finally started. Crap day today, you cant see it unfortunately but there is a hair line crack in the flywheel. Had to order new one. The fancy leads that arrived are all the wrong length , but the supplier has promised to look into it for me.

The flywheel looks a little blue so maybe there was a problem. No I have not been riding the clutch.
Amount of parts soon racks up when you collect over a year for that winter break/ install.

Back at it again tomorrow as I have 2 weeks leave whilst the wife takes my son around SA to see where he was born etc.

Have a good week all.

Keep going Jon - know your pain, been working steadily on ours since Dec and still dont have an engine installed!
You will get there buddy and nice to have 2 weeks to play - especially now the weather is nice and warm ;)
What are you plans with the engine whilst its out?

Hey Matt thanks for that hope you are taking that speed machine up to the Early Bay camp out. :msn4:

Stu what a pain in the ..... . Cracked flywheel, oil leaks and a load of small bits on the engine plus, after your recommendation some stainless hoses for either side and the warm air tube to the carb.

Doing I hope some work on the front steering including damper , both adjustable tie rods, track rod and an uprated anti sway bar. Have a new loom for headlights also not sure I will get there.

As you say keep at it and will get there eventually. Keep well all.

Whilst your there you should consider uprating the clutch release bearing to a later type (if it is an early type)
Replace your pushrod tubes and seals - I went for spring loaded ones which never leaked a drop
Check the condition of your oil cooler and replace if necessary
Obviously replace all your fuel pipes and the filter from the tank
Im sure there are a couple of other jobs you could do whilst its out to keep yourself out of mischief!!

Have fun

Yeah, booked the Campout tickets a while ago, really looking forward to it.
Took a trip up to Graham at Midland Early Bay this week to sort the front suspension, but as always, things didn't go to plan. Graham did fit a pair of gas dampers up front and these have helped loads. They also went through and sorted out some other problems. Ran like a dream all the way back home.
Helped it was a sunny day as I was dreaming about summer!!

So many job's so little time....................
Already has uprated clutch release bearing fortunately.
Not taking heads off this time round but have a set of adjustable push rod tubes for the future.
The rest should hopefully be good for the next year or so.

I think first long trip away this year is the camp out so fingers crossed. Hopefully see you there Matt.
I would offer to convoy but Boris would never be able to keep up. See you guys soon .

Have a good week.

So this is the 1st picture of one of the many disasters this time round.
The leads I ordered from a specialist arrived and are meant for a type 4
I will do a small write up on it when the new ones arrive.

Picture of the new flywheel that replaced the old one that had a hairline crack in it.

Now the clutch that I bought off a friend on this site. However it was not his fault that the size is wrong and
it was out of round. You can see it does not fit into the recess , both on the new and old flywheel.
You can just make out that it is about 5 mm to big on one side.(top).

Engine finally back in , 2 and 1/2 hours later and a little help from the neighbor.

This was the culprit for most of the time, the top left where you cant get your arm into. Little bit of
gaffer tape and a ratchet spanner and finally back in place.

And then this stuff arrived with vengeance and buggered up the rest of my play time.
The cold I can live with most of the time in the garage but lying in the snow is not for me.

One piece of advice people, never use round head bolts and a lock nut if it is exposed to the elements
and you cant get a grip on it. Ask me how I know!

Some welding had to be done to repair and replace.
Well that's about it for now , 2 weeks leave and not enough done
Better luck next time, for now we keep plodding on.
Have a good week all.

:( Sounds like the stars were not aligned when you started this work.
Fingers crossed all will go well for you now :)

A new set of plug leads have finally arrived, story on the gallery page.
Also a pair of circular air vents for either side of the dash.
These to replace the painted white ones, by the po.

Enjoy the week
