Do I need a mono speaker?

Wired up a Blaupunkt Wolfsburg I recently bought and it sounds terrible!

Is it because it is mono and I attached a standard 2-way modern speaker?

Anyone running a similar radio in the van and can suggest a set-up?

Hiya Matey, I run a standard medium flavour only radio in my bus and hooked it up to a Alpine three way coaxial 350W speaker and it sounds impressive but by the standards of the day. On full blast it ain`t too special but most systems of this age aren`t but day to day running is pretty good. It`s a nine inch oval speaker and that`s about as much as you can squeeze in without resorting to butchery behind the dash board. The overall plan is to run this as is and supplement it with tunes from my phone via Bluetooth to a Bose rechargeable for use on sites and in the bus especially when Bob Marley is required (most times)whilst camping :mrgreen:

A mono head unit just means that you get the same sound in the left and right channels, rather than a stereo sound where they differ. If you've wired up a 2-way coax speaker, then this will have a built in crossover that will split the high frequency signal and send it to the tweeter, and the low frequency will go to the main speaker.

What have you got wired to which connections - and which connections do you have available to use? It shouldn't make a differnce what type of speaker is wired to an output - so long as it can give you the full range you want to listen to.

Depends what you mean by "sounds terrible"

Assuming there's nothing wrong with the head unit, you could check its impedance matches the speakers.

If the head unit is designed for 8 ohm speakers, you could overload it and cause damage if you connect 4 ohm speakers.
And if you use 16 ohm speakers, they will be a bit quiet.

The other thing to look at is the wattage of the speakers.

If the head unit is 20W, then speakers less than 20W might actually break down at full volume.
If the speakers are designed for a lot more than 20W, the head unit may not be able to get much sound out of them.

It sounds like a normal stereo with the balance turned to one side???

Need to get an aerial sorted so I can try the radio, only used an iPod so far...
