Make sure you fold the bottom of the door membrane inside the door and not stick it to the frame as you have done, it will leak inside the bus.................

Nice work

good work mate - exactly what id like to get done - i try and avoid the rain and salt at the moment but id really like to get stuff done so i can use the bus more in the winter - sounds like i should plan a trip down to resto haus and stay at my brother in laws place in braunton :D

We use our bus all year round, it's a family bus after all! :lol: Unfortunately, enjoying it all year round will take it's toll, as i haven't had the time/weather/2 children etc have all played a part.

I would certainly recommend any of the products i have used on the bus, if you can have to time to do it - this took weeks of hard labour to get it like this!

I'm sure Bob would be able to sort out anything you needed doing - I'll make sure he pops in on this thread.

Your shopping list:

x5 Lts FE-123
x1 chassis pack 10m2 Epoxy-mastic
x15 Lts min wax. I bought 25 Lts, 2 cans spare.... :msn4:

Cheers!

Hi DH!

Cheers! Things have been quite busy lately, you can see what bodywork has been done, just in time, now the temperatures have dropped here, they have been spreading salt ready for the freezing roads, so happy the underside is treated.

Watching on another thread regarding lagging the center heating pipe, this was mentioned:

http://www.insulationandlagging.co.uk/Pipe-Insulation/30mm-Thick-Kooltherm-Phenolic-Pipe-Insulation" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

May be the next job, mine has the OG lagging, in good condition, but more heat is always nice. May use the above, alongside the OG lagging if space allows though the propex does work well, a change to red bottle butane Calor gas may be on the cards if the temperatures drop more.

I have been messing around with ignition timing and tuning the 34 ICT's, fitted brand new gen Webers, and a new stainless steel exhaust in the stock style. Replaced all the fuel hose and filters.

This is what i was using as a guide, i'll take a close look at my pulley, as IIRC a dimple is on the front edge of my pulley wheel which i understand this to be TDC, and the v notch to be 5 ATDC, assuming it's the original pulley to my engine.

I had been setting the timing AFAIK where is should be, but it feels flat and is hesitating. IIRC, i only have one V notch on my pulley, which is a AE engine code, I think that this is 5 ATDC, i measured up a mark around the 7.5 BTDC mark, but still feels underpowered and flat. So i moved it to where it felt best, with no hesitation from idle, and decent mid throttle response, with a noticeable change in induction noise, now the idle speed is too high, so more adjustment needed, i will recheck the timing with the gun once i reset the idle, and see where is lies then, it may be that it is at 5 ATDC, though i suspect that twin carbs and the exhaust may affect things a little.

Running a stock vac advance dizzy, which according the vw resource website is the correct one for the AE engine. I did buy a spare brand new replacement dizzy, i may fit this and see what happens, though is a points dizzy, i may well get my Pertronix to fit

I still want to fit the Trojan 210aH battery bank I have, and the new split charge systems, but is on hold till my bank balance recovers a little from Christmas! Though this charger may well do the job of keeping the batterys topped up

Wiring tidy up is the next job, with the battery wiring etc looking messy, and messed with by previous owner.

I'd quite like to make up some battery and starter cables to my requirements, ready for the battery bank.....just need to find out what gauge cable i need, maybe rig up some power posts and run one thick cable to that, and them smaller cables off elsewhere.

Pictures as i proceed as always, slowly working through the boxes of bits in the garage.

Cheers!

Hi,

Not much to report over the past few months, been using it as usual, recent house move again, thank god for the extra space, the bus came in very handy!

MOT due soon, so fixing a few things, the high beam switch was a cheap plastic thing fitted to meet UK MOT regs when it first came into the country late 2007, surprised it lasted this long, it was always a little flimsy. Well, the lever broke off, and the switch descended into the dash wiring, a few months back, and i never got around to fixing it.

I guess the UK spec busses already had a flash function on the main lever stalk? Unless it's meant to flash on the US busses, and mine is faulty - hence why they fitted the little switch to pass it's first MOT?

I sourced a all metal heavy duty switch, push to make, 2 terminals, 20A rated, only a few quid from Ebay, with a chrome round lever, which looks more the part than a black flat lever.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/High-Current-Standard-Toggle-Switch-SPST-On-Off-or-DPDT-On-On-/160995021603?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&var=&hash=item257c0d1323" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here's the fitted pics

As the previous person had already cut out the hole, i had to re use this as i didnt want to remove the entire dash unit. The hole could be better placed, the dash is broke around the edges anyway, i have a spare somewhere which isnt broke as much... :roll:

The switch sits at a slight angle due to the plastic moulding around the edge of the clocks, i trimmed away a little to enable it to fit through the hole better, the plastic switch was a little thinner

Happy with the results, much more positive, one less thing on the pre MOT list...

I'll be sorting out the Trojan batterys and split charging system next hopefully, just on hold a little funds wise....house move has killed me!

Cheers!

Hi, nice to see an update 8) the flasher is on the stalk, but only works with the lights on :? strange but true

Looking good Alistair,

It is the type of treatment my bus needs and good to know there are places relatively close that will tackle this kind of job.

Was it expensive (pm please) and will they do it again or have they sworn not to touch another bay!? :lol:

Not much of a update, will try to get one with a bit more depth next time, only so much you can write about a toggle switch! :lol:

Hmm, yes, i think i remember something about that stalk, mine must have been faulty from the outset, so they just rigged a switch up to enable to lights to flash and pass the 1st MOT.

I do actually have a spare stalk, I'll add it to the list of bits to do......... :lol: Don't know if it works, was bought as working, but was a while ago, and i can't actually remember how many wires it has....... :roll:

Cheers,

Hi Matt,

Bob @ Restohaus did the work, did some other welding and paint as you saw from my thread as rust was coming through the sills in a place or two.

https://www.facebook.com/resto.haus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Work on my bus:

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.132793646871067.29583.100004212966787&type=3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He had it in for some time doing bits and pieces, so wasn't that cheap, but understand that it was a hourly rate, so working for a couple of weeks on mine will incur a certain price, but he was very fair, and explained every thing being done to the bus, and things that were uncovered etc. I supplied the products, which he was impressed with , and i understand he is using these now on his resto's.

I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem doing another bay, mine took a while, as i wanted a certain amount of work to be done on the underneath to my own requirements, which he accommodated with, which is why it took time.

He has done other bays/cars with rustproofing, and were done in a day or so i think, as was using a more straightforward undersealing agent.

I'd advise you to give him a shout to discuss exactly what you need doing. Tell him i sent you!

Hope this helps,

Cheers!

Alistair

P.S I have a couple of 5ltr cans of the wax if you want it... :msn4:
