Hi

Right, fiddled with the mixture, still not too sure - will have another bash when i get the Pertronix fitted, and the new inlet manifold as mine is rotten. Think i may have a slight air leak.

DSC00367.jpg

Not happy with the timing as 7.5 degrees, so hopefully the Pertronix and setting it again should be better. Must admit, when i advanced it so the revs rose, it was much more responsive, and drove better up hills - though i am sure this may be to advanced - couldn't hear any pinking, but occasionally the starter would chug a little, so i new it was a little to advanced, so put it back to 7.5. Hopefully the Pertronix set right will be as good as gold!

Thought i would change my front indicators to clear - so off-ski to Halfrauds as mentioned by another forum member as they did the chrome/amber bulbs - though the bloke didn't know what i was on about. And the bulbs i have are a dual filament with offset pins - i was expecting just a single filament bulb, so assume the dual is something to do with the USA spec running lights?
Anyway, on removal i found my nearside indicator housing half full of water, so need the rechrome the surround using tinfoil or something. And buy some new seals for the lights all round! You can see the tide mark halfway up!

Also, what is the easiest way to get rid of the flaky underseal so i can colour match it with rustoleum?? Didn't really want to ruin the og paint underneath, just get rid of the factory flaky underseal??
Any ideas??

Sweet van and some nice touches alistair! Loving the posters and blinds. Thought about doing something similar with music flyers/posters but couldn't find any. I'll keep searching.

Cheers dude!

The blinds turned out quite well in the end. Need to mess about with the jalousie one on the sliding door, as it was a quick fix before i went away. My girlfriend has to take credit on the poster work though The kick panels went well, though ran out of posters and had to use a few music ones that we had on a similar project inside the house, but with band album covers instead of surfing like inside the bus....

I have ordered another surfing book to finish off the kick panels and do the tailgate cover too. May just repaint the wood near the table, may be overkill on the posters - dunno, quite fancy it on some door cards, but could be a bit too busy? The roof posters went a little crinkly, need to practice on the amount of pva glue used - but it adds to the overall aged patina - at least that's what i reckon anyways

Have a look around cheap bookshop, you can sometimes find a book with a collection of things such as music - and that's what we did inside the house - along with stuff we have collected from Pacha and Mambo in Ibiza, things we both enjoy, and that's the best thing about a bus, you can make it like you want! :D

Cheers!

Hi!

Well, not a lot done to my van over the past few months, just been using it really, did a little bit this weekend on some new wheels and commercial tyres, which will be getting white walled sometime.

DSC00543.jpg

DSC00550.jpg

Also did a little work on the radio flyer i bought at Cornwall Jamboree......... The wood was a bit plain, so on with the varnish and stain, on with the new stickers, and on with my US plate, no forgetting painting the wheels white! ;) Stripped and greased up the axles, and the front turning arm.

Before, plain......

DSC00542.jpg

After, much better..........though i got a sticker a little out

New wheels and tyres - sprayed, ready to go on.

DSC00545.jpg

My helper with the masking tape, just sorting the dreads on the shrunken head!

DSC00549.jpg

The van sits a little higher, but more importantly, the engine revs have dropped a little, as the overall tyres diameter has increased.

Cheers!

Looks like you operate with military precision. Very jelous of the flyer, must get me one for the boy. Great work, can't wait to see the surf stylee roof.

You also asked me bout retractacble seat belts, mine were already in the bus. anyone know a good supplier? We need a longer length for car seats.

Cheers

Not too sure of military precision - maybe i worked in a operating theatre in a previous life?

That's the reason why i bought a flyer, though our baby is some time away yet.! It's a repro one, but was only £60, a pukka flyer is probably about £150, a little time spent, and i think it looks ok. Just need a nice blanket inside!

I'll post a thread about seatbelts.

Cheers!

Hi!

 I have not done much to the bus of late, so not been posting about it - got more plans for the interior though, and been buying up things for it, but to be honest whenever the weather has been good, we have been out and away in it - so i have done bugger all that i have wanted to do - and now the weather is pants i have got it covered up for the time being. I dont like working in the rain, my bus is outside, the garage is full of camper stuff and my motorbike!

Glad you are liking the interior, my gf has done the artwork on the roof. We are really pleased with the outcome for a first attempt!

Pinstriping?! Love it :bliss: Yep, North Devon, right on the coast! Mines a blank canvas, practice as much as you like! ;) Need something to make my generic white westy stand out from the rest of 'em! Would love some striping - let me know if you can sometime?

Your bus is looking fine - you got a feature coming up I see? Look forward to seeing that when it's out!

Cheers!

Just wanted to see what you were covering up!
Remember viewing the thread ages ago - the roof lining surf stickers was the bit I remembered. I'm lucky having a pretty original westy like mine, but I think there is alot more to be said for having a westy that you put your own stamp on
Nice work

I'll pass on your comments to the gf she takes the credit for the roof!

All covered up, though it seems like water is getting under the cover as it's damp underneath, i think it's maybe getting past the seems and leaking in somewhere, and with the strong wind there is now a tear near the fixing strap underneath. So i am in 2 minds whether to leave the cover on or take it off. At least it is keeping the rain out of the inside i think, it's just the wet paintwork now! Never mind!

Cheers!

Hi!

Treated the bus to a little interior bling to keep us all a bit warmer.........for starters, a 7ft cow hide, perfect, with no nicks or barbed wire marks, only branding marks, local cornish cattle, and a nice large sheepskin rug, again, local breeds. We gonna be warm in our bus! (even warmer if i fix the propex!)

See what you think.....

Cheers!

Alistair (now skint)

This is genius mate, can't believe I didn't think about it first! I think you may be seeing more of this at the shows this year. It may even drive beef prices down in the supermarkets due to a surplus in stock.

The new family will be well snug in there! ;)

Cheers dude!

Well happy with it, still got more plans for the interior, waiting for better weather to finish the rest off, like the window and door seals - stuck some ankor wax on the cab floor where is a little rusty, need to find that elusive leak, still think it's the window scrapers and door seals - they are knackered!
I need to stop going out in it, i never do any work on it, just keep using it! Even less when the new one arrives - which may be over the weekend.....best get the pineapple eaten?!

Cheers!

Hi!

Been collecting more bits. Stock exhaust, need to find some heat proof grey paint.

IMAG0116.jpg

Wire brushed all the rust off, any suggestions for good paint to put on? Would smooth hammerite be any good? I want grey though

IMAG0127.jpg

Brightened up the outside, got some of those headlight grills. Pain to fit, came to the conclusion that they need the stock curved front headlights to fit well, i have flat fronted replacements, the stupid bits of bent tin are never gonna hold them on. Quick fix in the form of some cable ties :msn4:
Still not decided on wether i like these or the yellow covers....?

IMAG0108.jpg

Got given some laminate flooring, so when the weather get a bits better, will take the interior out and fit

IMAG0107.jpg

Got the dash looking a little brighter with some nice alloy trim rings

IMAG0111.jpg

IMAG0114.jpg

Also got a while ago a center belly pan, all painted and rust free, and hopefully if i can get all the old underseal off under the bus, will paint the lot in body colour. Have posted some more pictures in tech re painting advice....

Cheers!

Looking good Alistair,

I always use Grey Galva Zinc spray for the exhaust, make sure you choose one whit a high temperature rating it stays on for ages.

Cheers DH!

Is that like weld through coating? Do you have the name of it, or is it actually called Galva Zinc?

I found this:

http://www.rustoleumdirect.com/123.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

2185 AE Cold Galvanizing Compound - For durable anti-corrosion protection of bare, not rusted steel and weldings (90% zinc in te dry film). Matt grey colour.

Though it says not on rusted metal, see picture above - back to square one?

Looks like the same, i'm using zinc spray from Würth that is ok to temps of 550 degrees and works fine on light rusted steel like your exhaust.
