Nice to see another update Alistair, i have a eye out for some Yellow headlights too.
I think the best place to look for is France because this was the standard collor over there.
Keep up the good work 8)

Hi DH!

Cheers! Been slack on updates - 10 months! Too busy just using it - once i finish work, it's my daily, shopping, trips out, getting rid of rubbish etc, I promise this summer i will try to get done some of the jobs very much outstanding - like underseal, and give it a oil change etc.

Yeah, France is a good call for these yellow covers, I think the ones we find here in the UK are Lucas branded, which is a UK company, selling them as a accessory for folk on trips abroad, so probably 1970's I think judging by the style of the covers.

Cheers!

Cheers Just,

Yeah, lord knows why it didn't fit well, the front bits were really hard to fit too. Maybe my vans bent?!

Hi Jon,

Here's a closer up pic of the clips just in case you fabricate some and go yellow instead of stone guards, the plastic is yellow, but for some reason my phone likes to reduce the yellow - i tried taking a sepia style shot through the yellow but my phone auto compensated, and turned the shot normal - thanks for that, you try and be arty and electronics comes along and cocks it up...........

Failing that you could use small dots of double sided velcro, that'd do it.

As regards legallity - but it appears yellow or white is allowed...

Hi!

.......And then this arrived

IMAG6008.jpg

Along with the rest all here.........

IMAG6009.jpg

Nice!, Weber 34 ICT's, manifolds, linkage and filters. Not too sure what else I need?? A few nuts and bolts, maybe a change to the air filter, fancy a retro type pancake like the Okrasa kit, similar to Dirty Harrys setup.

Lots of questions will be asked about fitting this lot.........

Cheers!

Hi Alistair,

Keep in mind that the knecht repro airfilters won't fit with the stock fanshroud!
Surfbus had the same problem and he fitted a round aftermarket fanshroud.

Hi DH,

Ahh, problem the, dont want to change the fan shroud, perhaps that is why the ones I have are shaped like that? The crappy aftermarket filter i have, you know, the ones with the foam inside, they have a offset center, though will have to check the hole size, maybe i can use the top and the base and find a filter element to fit, one that is a little taller, i may even find some better mesh from somewhere?

Cheers!

Alistair

Hi Allistar,

Ok i know the ones with the offset center (chrome), these might clear the stock fanshroud as long as they have a 52mm inside diameter.
You can just roll a sheet of this metal arround in the filter base and top, original knecht and my Riechert filters did the same back in the days.

Hi DH,

Yeah, that roughly what i would like to achieve, next time i am in the garage, will do some measurements. What type of filter is fitted to yours, are they like a K&N inside, or oiled foam or suchlike?

Cheers,

Alistair

Been wondering why you had been so quiet Alistair!

Thanks for the update - I have a pair of the lucas covers too - they do look fiddley!?

Matt

Quiet yes, too busy using it and never getting anything done, though now i am getting the bodywork tidied up, i fancy a slight change to the look this season.

Not tried fitting the covers yet, yes, they do look fiddley!

Still not fitted the exhaust i got from you, though have bought a Bluebird stainless end pipe for it! Will fit it when i do the carbs

Cheers!

It is just a long sheet that is rolled and forms about 4 to 5 layers, and you oil/clean them now and then.

Hi!

Also bought gen VW drive shafts complete, and new bolts. My old ones have stopped making the noise, so think they are just dry, the old boots are split, so to save hassle, bought new kit. Should hopefully not need to worry for a very long time.

Noticed that the new boots dont seem to be rubber, seem to be a bit more rigid, maybe soft plastic?

Cheers!

Alistair

Hi.

Do you have a part number for the driveshafts and did they come direct from VW or a specialist supplier?

Hi dude,

I got them from JK IIRC, here's a link. Sometimes they have a 10% sale or voucher on, maybe keep your eyes peeled.

Hi,

Well the bus has now gone to Carl at Beetlebank for the repair to the accident damage at the rear corner. I'll be getting some additional paintwork done whilst it is in, time depending - we are off camping in a few weeks!

This is what it looks like now...........

Hi,

Some progress work already..........

006-1.jpg

005-1.jpg

004-1.jpg

003.jpg

002.jpg

001.jpg

Rear corners, rear valance, engine lid, engine lid hinge area all bare metalled, all in rust free condition, battery tray removed, but no rust into corners. Unfortunately some additional accident damage has been found on the other rear corner, and Carl has done his best to straighten out the most damaged corner due to the accident with panel beating and heating and shrinking, this area is now free of the thick filler which has been in place whilst in the USA, I reckon on possibly up to 4 different accidents to various areas on the corners have taken place over the 40 odd years, and Carl has done his best to straighten and lead load where he can, and the original panels have been saved.

He has stripped the engine lid, which aside from being slightly bent in most areas, also had it's far share of filler covering dents, some of the areas which are double skinned are somewhat tricky to get dent free without considerable labour, so he has made good where needed. Again, the engine lid was rust free, just as with the rest of the bare metalling has uncovered some dents.
Still very good work and progress is being made, with the rear valance now bare metalled , the job of trying to straighten dents on a double skinned corner are in progress.

More pictures as and when.

Cheers!

Alistair
