Lobie I've got a empi shifter and its smooth as you like. Gene Berg ones are lovely and I've only personally heard good stuff about them, they're bloody expensive mind! :shock:

They are simply the best - well worth the outlay, I wouldn't be without my locker

Yeah, top notch stuff. Only gripe for me is I find the angled edges a bit uncomfortable and at this time of year, it's ruddy cold to the touch!

Remember the shifter will only be as good as your bushes and linkages...

Cheers

You could always splash out for one of the new ball handles. http://www.geneberg.com/product_info.php?cPath=17_476&products_id=3027" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I had a locker, which was nice but decided I wanted something different so went for a bug-tech.

It looks better in my opinion, you can extend the reach of the shifter and also set the counter pressure for reverse lock out.

The only thing I didn't like about the Berg was reverse lock out was controlled by a cable. Both shifters are an excellent improvement but where the bug-tech doesn't have the heritage it has it in terms of build quality and style, plus you can customise it to suit your bus. A big plus is you just bolt it down and job done, no shift plate to mess with it just works.

I have a CSP shifter fitted and would highly recommend it, just another option for you,
I have heard its as good as the berg and I cant fault it apart from the plate adjustment upon initial installation which was a faff

Back in the 60's & 70's Gene Berg was the don, if you wanted a quick VW you used Gene Berg parts. These days their gear is equally as good, I have some Berg stuff for my big motor I'm building BUT there are also company's such as CSP, Bugtech and DRD who sell equal quality products for less money.

10% off gene berg stuff at the mo!

best shifter imho, and even better looking with the ball handle. 8)

I've thought about changing a few times but my gear shifts with the original shifter isn't too bad on the whole now I'm used to it. Seeing all the good comments about the improvements tempts me though just don't want to spend a chunk of cash for not a lot of gain :) Maybe something for next year.....

So with all this interest, who's in for a group buy? Prowagen are selling them for 335 pounds plus postage. Ordering from Berg directly with their current 10% discount a bus shifter is$255.89 or 159 GBP. Plus postage ????? Pus VAT of 20% still comes out miles cheaper. We may even get a group discount.

So who's in???

I have a vintage speed shifter and its poop!! Tho i'm now thinking my linkage must be worn, its that bad! Feels no different from the original shifter, in fact i would go as far as to say worse! I just cannot get it to set up right!! 2 professional mechanics spent over 2 hours on it. Myself a further 2, till i finally got it to work in all gears! 1st and 2nd shift is so close to 3rd and 4th shift tho, its almost impossible to differentiate between them. I've renamed it the 'shift and hope shifter'

Wish id bought a Berg now! Judging from the feedback! :-x

Own a Bay?......Feel the love!

Had a Berg in the Split and it was very good, have a stock shifter in the cross-dresser and am hankering for a Bug-Tech... have been since I first saw them, but in a very stock bus I'm not sure whether it'll look right...

I have a Berg in one Bug and swore that all my VWs would only ever have Bergs or stock... but then I got a ball handle CSP in my daily and I have to say that it is a beautiful bit of kit. Feels wonderful in the hand and the butterfly lockout is IMPOSSIBLE not to constantly fiddle with as you drive along.

The stock shifter in the Bay with good bushes it just great though, I'd contemplated a Vintagespeed to reduce the throw... loved the look of Wilf's green bus with the Vintagespeed.

I bought a Gene Berg locking one with a ball handle in the last group buy just over a year ago, and bought a new linkage kit from Heritage and cant fault either.

Hopefully over xmas i can get some ramp time at my mates garage and fit em both :oops: I need to as i cant fit my 3 gauge pod at the moment as the standard shifter has far to long a throw and i'd never get it in 1st

This was the thread
http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=22045" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and this was Johnny (organisers) comment on page 5:
prices are approx £306/$495 at (today rates) for the T handled shifter and £359/$579 for the round handled shipped. this does not include duty and vat. These prices are assuming no backs out, shipping will go up if people pull out. currently its working out about $35 per piece. Thats pretty good considering the weight.

There is more detail further down the page but didnt want to post it all in here, but this was nearly two years ago after checking. Mine took longer as my RHD drive bus went on fire not long after this and i had to wait for payout and ended up with a LHD so had to return it and swap which Al was more than happy to help out with.
