It all started last January when I bought the van. She was basically a running shell. No roof, no doors; alone in a barn.
When I was ready to put her on a flatbed truck she started fine. I got her partway out of the barn, then stalled. That was when the ignition switch failed. Not even bump-starting down the hill worked. The tow-truck man got in a huff and left me there in the dark. I had to push her back up the hill and into the barn (luckily I had a friend there to lend a hand).

So armed with a few rudimentary tools and a wind-up torch I set about trying to replace the ignition switch. I managed to bugger up the two m3 grub screws, and the steering lock mechanism all fell apart. Most importantly, although it is only now apparent. I dropped the teeny-weeny grub screw that holds the switch to the barrel. It must be in the barn somewhere never to be found. luckily I managed to bodge a new GSF switch in and it worked fine, until last week.

GSF kindly replaced the switch free of charge, but after much faff I can't get the ignition to work properly in situ. I think because I have lost the grub screw, and replaced it with a flimsy small screw, the movement of the barrel is causing it flex therefore not engage properly.

can anyone give me some pointers on what to try next?

Go on parts for sale wanted and ask for the part you may need to get the whole unit but it would solve your problem. Or take the flimsy screw to a specialist shop selling screws etc. I have done this for all my stainless steel screws nuts and bolts. Show them what you have tell them you need to go up a size etc.

My first choice would be to buy a unit from parts for sale and wanted. Hope this helps

After much faff, I managed to get the whole column apart, solder the broken horn terminal on the bottom and get the barrel/switch housing out. There was a tiny piece of casing that had broken off which was preventing the new barrel from fitting properly.
regarding the grub screw I used a wire terminal screw from an old plug.
