any recommended brands , i know lots recommend millers , but its only available from specialists , any off the shelf recommendations like castrol gtx etc

Lidls do a good Mutigrade. But Morrisons have Texaco at £7.99 at the mo. Any of the brand name multigrades should be fine.

a friend told me Lidl also do a semi syn oil for around £8 which is a great buy for every day cars

WRT oil change: I was always told to never overfill the engine, and that too much oil is as bad as too little.

Is this true :?

Too much oil can be a bad thing - too much pressure can blow seals & if the camshaft starts hitting the oil you'll aerate the oil - not something that will lube your engine well.

WHS^^^ though I suspect you meant the crankshaft splashing about in the oil bath....

nicked this off Richard Atwells site a truely usefull wealth of acquired knowledge....

 dont be daft you'll end up in a right hole if you listen to me too much

regarding the crankshaft splashing and airating the oil this is a contentious issue amongst many and its a right ball ache to read through everyones theory needless to say the overfilling will increase the pressure and you cant rely on the release valves.... the seals are a very likely failiure aswell as the likely hood its gonna blow out of any weakspot it finds and paint your engine bay, drive, motorway ....
