Hello all,
My steering box as started to make a loud clunking noise when turn the steering wheel. Steering is still ok with minimal play, but bit worried about the clunk and MOT is due next month
The box is a reconditioned unit from MegaBug and was bought about three years ago. I had a look at it and it is filled with grease, am I right in thinking it should be filled with oil not grease?
Am thinking I might need to get another steering box, don't think I want to use MegaBug again, can anyone make a recommendation?

Yes meant to be filled with oil not grease. I have a megabug box unfortunatly. I topped it up with the correct gearbox oil and also adjusted it. Try that first before replacing it

Just got mine back from http://www.power-steering.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . It steers better than it ever has done now, even in these strong winds.

Very pleased.

What's the correct oil to use? I presume I'll need to remove the grease from the box then fill with oil or did you just top up with grease still in box?

Just filled it with gear oil although I believe Penrite do a steering box oil for older steering boxes.

Sounds good. How much did it cost and do you know the details of how they reconditioned it? Where the gears and cogs in the box machined/replaced?
After looking into this a bit, from what I can gather it seems that some reconditioned boxes are just packed with grease which makes them seem great for a short while until the grease starts to thin out. Think that's the problem with my existing 'reconditioned' box,

It was just shy of £200 if I remember correctly (£180 :? ?) and I believe they machine the existing components if they're in good enough condition. Don't think you can get the parts for these steering boxes anymore.

My previous reconditioned box was packed full of grease, I believe this was from Megabug, it lasted 5 years of low mileage driving :( .

Cheers bananacustard, I'll give them a bell and see what they say.

We have also just had ours done by power-steering whilst its early days so far so good.
