Hi,

Just wondering what kind of gearbox I have, I'm a total n00b in this
so please be kind... ;-)

It doesn't look so old, the housing is almost shiny in places where they missed spraying it with underseal...

Is it safe to use a high pressure cleaner on it (using water) ??

The code your after is towards the nose cone, bottom pick to the left of the wire brush right of the diff, it will start with two letters and span the rib....

it will be two letters and 5 numbers denoting the date

it looking like a CA box pre 72...standard bus box (early)

The gearbox is setup for early fitting pre '72. Look on the underside of the gearbox below the oil filler plug, you will see a flattish area which should have some letters and numbers stamped in it. This is the gearbox code.

Thanx guys,

Should I do anything to it other than change the oil (planning on synthetic)
and clean it?

When I bought the bus it went in all the gears smoothly, so I recon its OK.

Or do all you guys give it an overhaul?

Cheers

Unless you know what your doing just flush the oil and replace the seals to the drive plate/diff area....

An overhaul is a good few hundred notes if it felt ok then chances are it hasnt been abused... the boxes in the T 25 (the aircooled 2ltr) tend to get ragged but on a bay they pretty much last forever.....

change the oil and leave it as is... if it was fine before it'll most likely still run well. I would leave gearboxes to the experts i think a refurb is a big and tricky job, i certainly wouldnt attempt it.

Change the oil by all means but just use 80EW/90 gera oil. Synthetic is unnecessary. VW never specified it.
