Wooden roof lining in a tintop with a headliner

I'm liking the look of a wooden headliner, especially one I could customise to my liking. I have a hankering for some images of Pulp Fiction posters, Star Wars, Dirty Harry, Gene Berg etc...

Just what is required though, would I run it full length, cut it part way, where do you get the edging that holds the wood in place?

Like I don't have enough to do already :mrgreen: I'm adding my my list.

i think it is strongy on this site that had some of the j strip that get riveted to the side panels, there are loads that sell the westy tin top ply lining basically the j strip gets fitted then you have the arduous task of trying to bend large sheets of ply and fitting them into the j strips either side, looks good when its done though

Im sure i have seen on my travels someone has done it in full lengths (front to back) in tongue and grooved ceder and it look awesome

my panel has a hard board headliner fitted when i got it covered in some sort of paper .its been screwed to the header railand is one piece.

The down side to doing this is that you have to grind/cut drill off the vinyl roof retainer clip above the front doors this is done so the J section can be fixed.
Also at the rear of the van you have to put a shelf, or get the steamed/bent panel to cover up the tail gate hinges.A full length roof would look good 8) but I bet its a bitch to fit,someone on here has done it but cant remember who....Dave

gingerporsche had one done on his bus. I believe it wasn't the easiest job, looks good though!

To be honest its simple, you need to get a westy roof kit (available from a few suppliers) but for the tin top version, then you need the j section metalwork that runs down the sides of the bus that it hooks into and then the I section piece that goes into the joints across the width of the bus. the ply panels come in 3 sections, one for the over cab area, one for the centre section and one for the rear. You need to put a rear locker in as the panel only goes as far as the hinges and is a bit untidy.

Don't think the j strip is strong enough in plastic its a tight fit and the flex of the board creates quite a lot o pressure.

Hi all i fitted a one piece in mine and gingerporsches bus,trust me its not a job for the faint hearted !!!! major patience tester but hell is it worth it never seen any headliners that come close in looks !!!!

Did you do that with a single sheet of 8 x 4 .. if so was it flexi ply or normal ply? did you have to cut off the mounts for the fabric lining??
