Hi everyone, i could do with some help please. I've got a 71 crossover bay, pretty standard everything, we've been to France several times, indeed just come back from 3 weeks touring around the med and atlantic coasts. The bus goes really well but it's developed a nasty "clunk" as the drive is taken up, i.e when i accelerate suddenly, move off and change gear. The noise isn't constant, when we're rolling it's fine. It seems to come from both sides and it definitely big enough to shake the frame. I've checked that everything is tight, mountings, shocks, bearings, cv joints. I know everything points to the cv's but they've done less than 5000 miles, i've taken them off and regreased them , they seem ok. Has anybody got any ideas please ? Could it be the diff ? do they wear out ? I 'm at my wits end , it's unbelievably hard to decide exactly where the bl**dy noise is coming from! Any help/advice would be much appreciated! as i don't want to just go and get another box if i don't need one, cheers.

Hi,thanks for the reply, yes i've done all that, (always try the simplest/cheapest solution first ! is a good motto) it's all ok.

Sounds like its either backlash between the gears in the gear box, or worn CV joints on the drive shafts.
Its worth dropping the drive shafts and re-greasing the joints every 3 years or so if your doing a lot of millage.
A quick check you could try is to jack one rear wheel up at a time, put van in gear and roll the wheel back and foward, it may be a good way to find where the clunk is coming from.
