Ex Westy,
So, i'm slowly retrofitting a steel sunroof in my stripped Westy, just about got it licked, and ready for a trial fit, but on attempting to fit the aluminum sunroof guide channels, i found that I don't have a hole or locator for the pin in the back end of the aluminum channel. So, can anyone take a picture of where this hole should be so I can drill one.

1st pic is the pin in the end of the channel

Second pic is looking inside the sunroof tray towards the back of the bus. You can see the drain hole on the right, I'm assuming there should be another round hole to the left of this for the pin to lock in

3rd pic is taken at the back of the bus through the tailgate and is the outside corner of the sunroof tray. Again, i think I should have a hole here some where for the pin to locate in.

Can anyone help???

Is your van a sunroof model? I have a crappy camera I can try and photograph tomorrow>

EB westys used the sunroof roof... the late westys had a whole new roof 8)

As per Paul's comment, it's an early bay westy so has a deluxe sunroof panel minus a few essential parts that I've been retro-fitting. These pins at the end of the tracks are the last part to do. Any pics appreciated, but you'll need no headliner or sunroof panel out to take them.

Not entirely sure you need the pin to locate into anything, the screws that hold the rails down in the opening should hold the rail in place. unfortunately sunroof and headliner in place at the moment otherwise I would have taken pics for you.

Sure we've had the conversion before but you have put in drain tubes and have the 'ramps' in the opening?

Yep Graham, drain tubes in and sunroof ramps. Not easy mind, I wouldn't recommend it.. I'll be posting a full 'install' when it's done, to warn others off!

The channels will need locating at the back to stop any movement as it can effect the sunroof travel and cable...so I'm told, and with cables being the best part of £300, I dont want to risk it.

if took the tail gate hinge cover off would i see it,i put my hand up there
didnt fill anything, but nearly got me hand stuck

Ho you wont feel anything from the outside the locating lugs are inside if that makes sense, you need the pins to locate as you quite rightly say they will spread. I had a go at photo mine but the pictures came out crap, I shall try tomorrow with some additional light and see if I can get a better pic.

I've decided to make a spreader bar to locate the pins that will bolt in thru the tray. Just about there, but I only have one of the nylon pins, anyone got another, or two even? Heritage list them, but out of stock

They appear to be the same as a bug part. Part number on mine is 313 877 359, which lists as bug on wolfsburgeast webs site.

Thought i'd update this with my fix.

Out of 25x3mm stainless angle, I made a spreader bar with a radius to match the inside of the sunroof tray.

I then worked out where to put the holes for the pins, drilled the holes, then taped it to the rails and pushed the rails into the sunroof cavity to make sure it worked/fitted.

All good, so while the spreader was back there, I measured from the back of the roof opening to the back of the spreader, transfered this measurement inside the roof, then marked it for the fixing holes.
Then I pulled the spreader back out, drilled the holes in the sunroof tray, pushed the spreader/rails back in, and marked the spreader through the holes.
Spreader back out, drilled and tapped for m6, then final fit, back in and screwed up.

Thanks for all your input.

I retro fitted one a few years ago, there were no locating pins like that, have you had them off, did they come that way round, they may be in backwards and just be end stops, the rails don't bend once screwed down

That#s how they're supposed to be davidoft, pins at the back to locate them. It actually states in my official Volkswagen body book to make sure they are located when you re-assemble. Any way, it's done now and at the paint shop. :)

Hi from OZ
I too am converting a westy into a sunroof
I bought my 71 with no pop top or interior,
Planning to turn it into a micro in the process.
First time I read anyone else doing it, don't feel all
alone now :)
Where did u buy the sunroof and parts from ?
I'm only at the beginning of the resto so long road ahead.
Last question , how many drain holes r u using?
I noticed the rears on the pic, r u using fronts and sides?
Thanx
Chris

Hi Chris,

my bus came with a roof and tracks, but that was it. the rest i bought from various traders/individuals as and when i saw them. EIS do a few repro parts, the plastics at the front, cables, winder handle and the pins, drive cog and winder mech, but pretty much everything else you'll have to find second hand.
I'm using 6 drains, all a complete pain in the arse to fit. The fronts and rears needed holes drilled in the roof to get through the inner skins, as VW didnt put them in Westies, the front and mids needed holes in the floors and inner sills, and the fronts also thru the bely pans. I've drained mine out under the bus as i didn't want holes in the bottom of the B pillars, and you cant get through the floor behind the C pillars to get out the bottom of the outer sill. It's a lot of work Chris, you really need to want it. I've got a load of pics i keep meaning to make into a 'how to' post, but havn't got around to it yet.

I've got some left overs, but the shipping might be a bit prohibitive.

I've located a full set up in the USA , been waiting for pix for ages
He's supposed to be a reliable source for used parts.
There is also one for sale on this site, waiting on answer to see if it's
complete.freight will be a killer either way
I will go ahead with doing the conversion, I also have a westy ,
Don't need two :)
