Exploding coil!

Hi everyone..
Does anyone know why my 3 month old coil exploded? It had obviously overheated and the plastic top had cracked, blown off and spilled everything.
It happened between parking my van in the garage after a run and next morning..the ignition was off.

Do you think it was a dodgy coil, or something more sinister? I've done about 10 miles with a new coil and all is ok.

I just really want piece of mind before setting off to Big Bang.

Never heard of a coil exploding like that. Must have been faulty.

You must be right cos I've not had any trouble since..

Did have the condenser go down though at the weekend...and on the M1.
If its not one thing its the other at the moment...is that why we love 'em?

we have had a couple of lucas pattern coils explode, normally when the coil hasn't been in the correct position and the oil hasn't been able to help keep the core cool, or the oil has leaked from a crack or such
