What's a "sping pin do-dah"?
If you mean where the outer sleeve fit's into the backplate, twist to loosen/pull/molegrips.
If you have your replacement, you'll see what you can happily destroy in the process. :)

Persevere - It'll come out. :) I've done lots and they always do unless the backplate is crumbling and should be replaced anyway - one way to find out...

Have you edited this or am I a thicko ? I'm sure I read CABLE last night, not HANDLE???
Please ignore my advice.

Zed you need to go to bed earlier :msn4: the only one i changed was a ba**tard to punch out ,hellishly tight .best way might be to remove mech and get it on a block with a socket or tube to suport it and then punch the pin out.stand a risk of bending some thing if its still in dashunless you can jamb a length of tube under it down to a wooden block on the floor.

That's true, but so does the OP who seemed oblivious to me cackling on about backplates.

Try using a G-clamp to push a blunt pin/nail/punch so the pin in question is forced out. You need a shallow tube (I used a nut) below to allow it space to come out before it hits the other end of the clamp. Does this make any sense at all?

I replaced my old one with a MCJ item. The old handle was crusty so after an hour of piddling around I tore the handle to shreds in anger and I eventualy drove the pin out, was a right bastard though.

I removed mine with just a hammer and drift on the roll pin..... though did wedge a length of 2"x2" between the floor and the handle to stop the handle springing about when struck!

Cut the rubber part of the handle off (if it's in the way), I hammered a small flat head screwdriver (the correct width) onto the roll pin, it didn't budge (as its been there for forty years !) then after a bit of WD40 and a wait had another go and it came straight out.

Good luck
