As it says, as you may have read my golf was stolen this week and I got it back today, no body damage or anything but I'm unable to get drive in second or fourth but can get drive in Reverse/First/Third.

Anyone know what this is likely to be or can point me in the right direction, looks like it selecting the gears but not making contact with the gearbox, have they trashed the box :( :( :(

Hi Graham,

If the gearchange linkage cables are both connected still, then I'd have thought it sounds like a broken selector fork in the box? I hope it's not that serious...
Glad you got the car back though!

Cheers
Al
PS: Thanks for sorting the extinguisher out the other day...sorry I couldn't stop and chat more!

As said check the linkages, i used to have a Mk2 8v GTI and IIRC there is a small plastic linkage towards the back of the engine near the box, these are a kown weak spot and are prone to snapping. A complete linkage re-furb kit off ebay costs about £20 and takes a couple of hours to complete
