Hi everyone, bear with me now! I’m trying to install an oil bath air filter. I have acquired the later version with both a vacuum and thermostat.
The vacuum can opens the flap nicely and holds vacuum when tested with my hi-tech syringe system.
So, my understanding is that the vac lines run from manifold to top of filter (thermostat), then continue on to the vac can under the snout. The thermostat allows the vac signal through when cold, and cuts it off when the air inside the filter gets too hot -closing the vacuum operated flap, and hence stops warm air coming up from the stovepipe by the cylinders, yes?
Rigged up as in my photo, i can’t draw air through at all, either cold or with a hot air gun running over the thermostat area. Looking in the can there doesn’t seem to be much there as you can see. Is something missing?

I haven’t even got on to the fact the filter stand in the engine bay has been removed at some point, or that my engine tinware doesn’t seem to have room to put another hole in for the warm air intake. Ho hum

Hi, still haven’t got to fit it yet, it’s all sitting there waiting. Thermostat switch seemed to work once I’d removed it and cleaned everything. Didn’t check the temperature it worked at but I set the whole lot up (with vacuum for the flap provided by my big syringe method) and firing a hairdryer up the inlet had it triggering the system well.
I still haven’t got hold of a stand for the filter yet, plus although I have managed to get the correct rear tinwear with the three hose holes it doesn’t match up with the (I think later) tinware I have-around the inlet heat tubes from the exhaust. ho hum.
The engines out at present to change to a full weight flywheel, and install flaps and thermostat that were all missing

Vac tube usually comes from carb..
Did you have to replace the thermo switch thingy ,the one in the top of the oil bath. (opens at 30°)
I upgraded to the same set up as you, vast improvement 👍
Is your 'hoover bracket' fitted? , at the base of oil cooler.
Just looked that up, never heard of that before.
no, none fitted on mine……yet another thing that’s missing!
seems difficult to get hold of, so may have to make one from the plans that are about on ‘tinternet
thanks for pointing that out for me, appreciate it👍

No worries, I've seen repro new one's for sale, you could try Desi Yates on fb .
Are your rear air deflector plates on, left and right hand?.IMG_20191111_152742.jpgIMG_20191111_152742.jpg

can’t see anything like that, bugger. I’ll have to go through everything and compare it to the exploded view I’ve got

why do people junk all this stuff?

Good question, idiots probably. Johnson Autoworks may help you parts wise, they supplied and fitted my bellows themostate.

The radius on the r/h air deflector is to clear the 50mm air hose that comes off the 'stove pipe'.
Right. I found a good series of 16 videos from awesome powder coat which goes through the steps to install everything.
So seems like I’m missing the “hoover bit”and both lower air deflectors (as you mentioned). Everything else I seem to have.

I thought an air cooled vw motor would be simple…..I think I prefer rebuilding my old Kawasaki dohc 4-carb motors than these things!

The only other thing not mentioned are two small plates that fit between the cylinder heads to direct air flow, not sure what they're called . Also tinware rubber seal and there are a few rubber seals around the oil cooler, avaliable new.

Seem to be called cylinder air deflection plates or baffles. I’ve got those, and a set of seals.
