sorry to re-kindle an old thread, but I read a thread last month that some people had been considering "upgrading" to a type 4 engine.

Well, I'm in a huge dilema as what to do with my engine. I'm runnning a cj Type 4 in a '72 crossover and thinking about rebuilding with a few mods. Not that i'm finding it hard enough as it is to decide exactly how far to go, Loxy decided to throw another spanner in the works and ask me why dont i revert back to a type 1 engine as parts are cheaper and more readily available.

Therefore, the question is, what would you think a type 4 2L (code CJ) engine complete with orginal twin carbs (34PDSIT), 2L gearbox and all the tinwear fetch?

its just a possible route to take rather than having to pay twice as much for the type 4 parts when rebuilding? also, by selling my engine complete i could use that towards the engine.

the engine is sound runner, and i've just recently finished a 3500 mile (in 7wks) journey around France and north Italy without a single glitch. i had no problems of overheating while travelling along motorways or round the towns in 34degrees heat

SO WHAT D'YOU THINK?

how much do you want for the 2L gearbox? what condition is it in and i assume its the 6 ribbed kind?

I dont know whether i even want to go down the change of engine type yet mate, thats why i put it in the technical rather than for sale section. jsut wondered what the whole package would be worth if i decided to go down that route

If you've been used to driving the van with a T4 lump don't even think about changing it for a T1 unless it's gonna be something big
The stock 2ltr kicked out around 86bhp as stock and was perfect to go into the bus really. Also with a couple of small tweeks here and there you can make a really quick, strong motor for not too much money as you can use the majority of the stock parts ie case, crank, conrods etc. I know the parts look expensive but by reusing as many parts as you can you'll save in the long run over building a biggish T1. My advice is stick with the T4 as they're bullet proof and should give you many miles of trouble free motoring :D
If you're looking at rebuilding the engine here's a great website
http://tunacan.net/t4/ I/m looking at building a 2054 at the moment :D

I've always had a type 4 -2lt in the bus, but had to use a stock 1600
when I had a top-end rebuild-really missed the extra horsepower :(
Even if you do switch to a type 1 *special* keep the 2lt box

You say you want to revert from the type 4 to the type 1 being a cross did yours come with the old type 1? or the 1.7 type 4 option?

To be honest youve got the bigger air intake the beefier brakes and the braced rear why not stick with the Type 4 stick a porsce fan conversion 8) and enjoy the natural increase in power I never had probs with my old 2Ltr getting parts etc.... wish I'd done the fan conversion though really tidies up the bay. theres plenty of american sites for tips on the type 4 motor....

Parts may well be cheaper for a TypeI, but how do you quantify the (extra) ease and enjoyment you get from being TypeIV powered?

I have a 1600 Bay-Bus, an 1800 Bay-Bus, and a 1776 Split-Bus. The 1800 is just so easy and pleasant to drive, quieter and everything. Even the expensive 1776 isn't as easy and smooth to drive, even if it MAY produce more power, technically (uses BUCKETS more fuel, too).

Unless you are really really tight for cash, I'd stick with the TypeIV. Then you won't have to wonder, as you hold up traffic on a long (not even steep) hill with your 1600, if perhaps having spent a little extra cash a few years previously would have been worth it after all...

I guess when it comes to Busses, I figure it's not worth trying to be cheap - that only results in crappy chinese parts and frustration.

There are endless discussions on TypeI v. TypeIV on theSamba.

Cheers, A.

the type 4 came out with the 72 as an option on the short lived 1.7 motor ( later replaced with the 1.8) thats why you have the square vents and brakes to accommodate the superior power and air required. Have a look on the M plate it will tell you what motor it came with.

Haveacamper - The 1600 air filter "stand" has been cut (hacked) off the wall in your engine bay, so I would think that it was originally a 1600.
