    Making a tow hitch?

Just wondering if anyone has made a tow hitch for an early bay? Or is the Just Kampers one any good? Is it hard to wire up the trailer lights socket?

Won't start....help me find the cause please...

My engine won't start!! I left the ignition switch on by mistake overnight, so when I went out this morning , the battery was flat, and after recharging the battery, I couldn't get her to start. Indicators not flashing!

My indicators suddenly speeded up and then I saw a wisp of smoke coming from under the dash and the indicator lights on the dash now stay on permanently. What could be the problem? I had a look at the relay and its a metal cylinder bosch one, VW part number 211953183A. Can't see it for sale...

Please help...carb doesn't fit on manifold!

Hi, I have a single port 1600 engine on a bus. I have a 1300 manifold. I have a 34 PICT Bocar carb. The carb won't bolt onto the manifold because the stud spacing is different. Do I really need to get a 1600 manifold, or is it ok to get an adapter plate to make them fit together? Or maybe...

    Removed my engine and...

...and I have a million questions. I'll start with this one... Question 1: Is it possible to take the engine out completely without removing the weber 34icts first? The flippin thing is too wide to fit out the back of the bus. It hits off the bracket that the rear valance bolts to. (its a 68...

    How to use body filler??

I'm planning to eventually bare-metal my bus and respray to achieve a smooth dent-free bus! In areas like the long side panel where its not rusty, but slightly dented here and there, do you put body filler directly onto bare metal, or do you use an etch primer first and then put filler on top?

    Best engine for 'Driveability'

Hi all Just wondering what engine is a good choice for a useable early bay. Does such a thing exist? My 1600 with twin webers is ok, but noisy as hell when drving at "normal" everyday speeds (60-70mph). Surely someone has come up with an engine that can produce the same power and speed at...

My bus is made of Hammerite

Hi all, the last owner of my 68 bus seemed to like blue Hammerite a lot. Its been slapped on top of all the floors, on top of God-knows-what. In my preparation to put down roof flashing on the floors as sound deadening, I've removed the plywood floor to reveal the Hammerite. There are some...

What tach / dwell meter do you use?

I think I posted this on vzi before the crash.... I have a new draper "inductive pickup" tachometer and I can't get a consistant reading on it....the rpm on the screen fluctuates wildly by several hundred rpm. I've tried moving it around to different places on the HT leads but nope, the...

Stripped threads on one of my Webers !

I was attempting to balance my carbs (34 icts) at idle, using a Uni-syn gauge and noticed that on the right hand carb, the bracket that holds the hex link bar was wobbly. So, I investigated and discovered that the screws were loose. When I tried to tighten them, it seems that the threads have...

    Duralay as sound proofing?

Has anyone tried this duralay stuff to make things quieter? Its called "Duralay Sound Barrier", used for under timber floors and carpets etc. Its 3mm thick, high density sponge rubber ....it weighs 3kg per square metre. Ya think it would work if I put two or three layers of it over the engine...

What type of sheet metal for repairs?

Should I be looking for any particular sort of sheet metal to do repairs on my bus? (e.g. patching a hole in da roof) I can get "bright mild steel sheet" in thicknesses of 0.8mm, 1.0mm, 1.5mm, 2mm. Is this the correct stuff to use and if so, what thickness would be best?

    Timing/dizzy question

I just want to confirm that I'm doing the timing right on my engine... Its a 1600 vege recon, twin webers, fitted with a Bosch 009 distributor. Is it correct to: 1. Adjust valves to 0.06 2. Check points / dwell angle 3. Warm up engine and set timing >3000 rpm at 32degrees BTDC ?

    Headlining options?

Hi all, I've just removed my hardboard headlining to apply some dynamat sound deadening to the roof panels and I'm not too keen on putting the headlining back again for a number of reasons: 1. The hardboard is sagging in the middle and is bangs around while I drive, making lots of noise. I...

    What is this box? (photo)

Its a hollow tin box, under the rear seat, just beside the wheel arch. It has a flap of metal on the end of it. It appears to go through into the fuel tank compartment. If I shine my torch through and then go round and look in from the back, I can see light behind the engine firewall. Anyone...
