Maybe I worded it wrong wiggy, he was happy to do whatever I wanted really, he did guide me but was all about what was right for me. I never felt pressured at all. :)

Yes... It had a Porsche fan on it Dave.. I mentioned your name, he knew you

It's not gonna be cheap this 1776 malarky! This may well be a very slowwwwww build thread people!!

I have also found them helpful when I have spoken to them. As you say they don't do the hard sell. I got the feeling like alot of company's though that although they would like to talk engines for hours, they would not get anything done if they did.

Watching your thread with interest as I am building a new motor for my Bus at the moment as well. :)

This is another interesting build thread I came across on the samba, whist considering my build.

Oooooooo I just had my quote.... I think I may be looking elsewhere for my machine services.. Absolutely no problem with these guys at all by the way. They obviously know what they're doing and produce only quality engines. I'd defo still recommend them, just out priced me that's all. :D The Porsche engine he had sitting in his clean room suggests top of the racing range rather than what I'm after..
Back to the drawing board for me again...

How much was it? If you don't mind me asking? :D

Well would you believe I had a vw engine machine shop pretty much right on my doorstep! Dropped the case, crank and heads in today and they'll be finished next week! I expected a much longer wait to be honest. Work to be done;

Line bore case
Reface thrust bearing aperture
Full flow
Bore case for 90.5
Bore Heads for 90.5
Disassemble, check, polish, reassemble crank with new bearings
Rebush conrods

That's pretty much it. Then the fun begins on reassembly..

I would get them to balance the rods

and also bottom end:

Crank, flywheel, bottom pulley and clutch, balanced all togther as one spinning unit.

As I'm reusing the rods Alex will they not already be balanced from the vw rebuild or will the rebushing knock them out again? (Excuse my ignorance  )

Yes forgot to mention they are balancing the crank, flywheel, pulley and clutch too :D

WILL THEY CC THE HEADS AFTER?

CC'in the heads Dave? I wasn't going to bother with the stainless valves etc.. Ball ache due to them not making stock size stainless valves and having to have machine work done for what appears to be little gain really? Happy to listen to different views of opinion though and they did offer yes..

Dave just read up on it.. Yes I'll get them to CC the heads once you've ported them and ive assembled the engine fully :D

depends on cam ,I have a used ok 120 but that might be a bit bigger than you wanted.new stock should be ok with 110.

Got a used 110 cam Dave.. Thank you though..

For those that are following the thread for interest and perhaps thinking about having a go themselves, I'm going to document what parts and route I've taken for each engine section. Today I've order the parts for my heads.

Twinport Mexican aftermarket standard 1600 heads (063 101 375 H)
Standard 8mm exhaust and inlet valves
Bored to 90.5mm
SSP uprated springs from Heritage
Port & polish chambers and manifolds

That's it.. Nothing exciting or over the top for my mild 1776. Keeping it simple and having done a fair bit of digging and asking around of various experts, unless your taking it down the strip that's perfectly adequate. Doesn't cost the earth either. :D

Got my goodies today  Dropping them off tomorrow for balancing.
